Along with the opening of our Little Madhatter Emporium, we created our event space, The Bookshop Salon. So far it has been used for our creative writing group and we have plans to hold 'Salon' evenings, where people can get together to share ideas, listen to speakers, educate and enlighten, inviatations to join us will be sent out in the New Year.

The Book Club

The Madhatter Book Clubbers continue to meet most months throughout the year and although it is not necessary to read the books I choose for the group it is always a pleasure to see booklovers get together for a drink and a chat about books, politics, and life in general. Here are a few of the books we have read this year.

The Paris Novel by Rachel Reichl: this book is worthy of a better cover, although it might be slighlty predictable it is a delightful story which combines family life, a true art story and a passion for finer food.

The Bee Sting by Paul Murray: deservedly shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2023, told from several perspectives over three generations the author has nailed the 'irish family drama'. If you like Sally Rooney you will love The Bee Sting, it's Rooney on steriods.

Yellowface by R F Kuang: this book will test your morals! You know the strong femal protaganist did wrong but I kinda wanted her to succeed - please dont judge me! Everybody wins out in the end ... except the dead author!

The House of Doors by Tan Twan Eng: this book was loved by all our book clubbers. To read it is to go back to a time when one dressed for dinner, gently perpsired in the Malaysian heat and if one was too have an affiar one kept if very quiet. A glorious mixture of fact and fiction and also listed for the 2023 Booker - in my opinion it should had won.

The Storied Life of A J Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin: Set in a bookshop in Maine, this is a wonderful love story between a man who has lost his will to live and a small child who appears in his bookshop and changes the lives of everybody around her. If you are looking for a good read this Autumn, start here!

We look forward to seeing you all in the Bookshop or The Emporium very soon. Until then, Happy Reading!

Kim and the Book Shop team.
